Fundamental and clinical evaluations of the efficacy of adriamycin (ADR) were performed using intravesical instillation therapy. This therapy did not show any appreciable transfer of ADR into the blood in rats and rabbits, when ADR was applied to 17 clinical cases of bladder tumors, five of them did not respond to this drug. The ADR serum level in these cases was very low. Instillation of 30mg of ADR per 10ml once a week, 10 times in total, proved to be effective in preventing recurrences in six cases for at least 2 months. There were no cases evaluated as obviously improved, and ADR cannot be proven to be more useful than other drugs. Therefore, other administration methods should be designed.
