Vitellogenin (VTG) and its mRNA are believed to be an effective and sensitive biomarker to detect the effects of estrogenic chemicals on fish. In this study, we constructed a novel specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers to detect VTG of gold fish (Carassius Auratus}, and investigated in vivo estrogenic activity of the alkylphenol chemicals such as 4-(1-adamantyl)phenol (AdP) and 4-t-octylphenol (OP) using gold fish. According to the results of reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR), the majority of gold fishes, which were exposed to AdP or OP, elevated VTGmRNA levels in liver. Especially, VTGmRNA was induced by AdP treatment significantly. These results suggested that AdP and OP may have in vivo estrogenic activity and AdP has more potent activity than OP.
