Cytochrome c oxidase activity in osteoclasts appeared in a short period after removal of the orthodontic force

To clarify changes osteoclastic bone resorbing function in a short period after removal of an orthodontic force, cytochrome c oxidase activity was carried out in Wistar rat osteoclasts near a maximally compressed periodontal ligament (PDL) and the area of the reactive products was assessed statistically. A control group (0H) of experimental tooth movement for 9 days and six experimental groups of 1 (1H), 3 (3H), 6 (6H), 12 (12H), 24 (24H), and 48 hours (48H) after stopping of the tooth movement were used in the present study. Osteoclasts with a developed ruffled border were present in the 0H, 1H, and 3H groups. In the 6H and 12H groups, many of the osteoclasts had lost their ruffled border, and had decreased relatively in number and size. In the 24 and 48H groups, the osteoclastic size decreased, showing a mononuclear profile. Statistical differences were evident between the 0H group and the 6H, 12H, 24H, or 48H groups. From these results, we propose that the bone resorbing function of osteoclasts situated near the maximally compressed PDL decreases over 6 hours after removal of an orthodontic force.
