We measured the concentrations of serum osteocalcin (BGP) and other serum components incidental to experimental tooth movement in pregnant rats in order to know the systemic reactions. Adult Wistar female rats were divided into three groups : NP-group (not pregnant : 18 rats), P-group (pregnant : 18 rats) and PE-group (pregnancy+tooth movement : 18 rats). When a vaginal plug was found after mating, the lower first molars of the rats were moved by wire springs with a force of 10 g for 7, 14, and 21 days. In each group, blood samples (5∿6 ml) obtained by heart puncture were biochemically analyzed for serum components (BGP, Ca, Inorg-p, Alk-p, Urea-N, total CHO, total protein). Differences among each group at each time point were compared by ANOVA. The correlation coefficients between serum parameters in each group were calculated. Results : 1) The values of the serum components of the P-/PE-groups versus NP-group (except serum BGP, total CHO and total protein) showed significant decreases at day 21 (p<0.001). 2) There were significant differences at day 21 between the P-and E-groups in serum Ca (p<0.01) and total protein (p<0.05). In the PE-group, there were high negative correlations in serum total CHO versus Ca (r=-0.951) and Inorg-p (r=-0.656). Conclusion : We should give orthodontic tooth movement during pregnancy scrupulous attention.
