The purpose of this study was to elucidate changes in serum concentrations of bone Gla-protein (BGP) during orthodontic treatment in adult females. Subjects comprised 32 adult females undergoing orthodontic treatment and ranging in age from 19 years 1 month to 34 years 2 months. Subjects were treated with multi-bracket appliances in extraction cases. Each subject agreed to provide five blood samples at the following time points : before treatment ; 2-4 weeks after last tooth extraction ; about 2 months after beginning retraction of canines ; about 2 months after beginning retraction of incisors ; and at setting of the retainer appliance. Samples of venous blood (5-6 ml) were taken between 10:00 a. m. and 12:00 p. m. in our laboratory. Serum BGP was measured using a commercial radio-immunoassay. The following results were obtained : 1) All patients displayed healthy serum parameters during orthodontic treatment ; 2) mean concentration of serum BGP was significantly increased after extraction compared to that before orthodontic treatment (p<0.01) ; 3) mean concentration of serum BGP after extraction was significantly increased compared to that at setting of the retainer appliance stage (p<0.05). Elevation of serum BGP concentration after extraction compared to during orthodontic treatment stages suggests local increase of bone turnover.
