Photoacoustic spectroscopy is used to study the heat generated by nonradiative processes in ceramic CdS and CdS_<0.5>Se_<0.5>. It can provide information about optical absorption because the detection of signal is directly proportional to thermal energy induced by the absorbed photons. Photoacoustic spectra of ceramic CdS and CdS_<0.5>Se_<0.5> depend on the sintering temperature. Photoacoustic signal intensities plotted semilogarithmically vary linearly with photon energy below the fundamental absorption edges. The steepness factor for CdS, which characterizes the slope of the semilogarithmically plot, decreases with increasing sintering temperature, indicating structural disorder. On the other hand, that of CdS_<0.5>Se_<0.5> increases with increasing sintering temperature, indicating a decrease in structural disorder.
