Stable Quasi-Crystals in Al_<75>Cu_<15>V_<10> Prepared by Crystallization of an Amorphous Phase

A mostly single icosahedral phase has been found to be formed by crystallization of an amorphous Al_<75>Cu_<15>V_<10> alloy prepared by liquid quenching. The crystallization-induced icosahedral phase is concluded to be a highly stable intermediate product because it remains stable up to high temperatures just below melting temperature (T_m) and changes to equilibrium Al_2Cu and Al_3V phases only after an annealing time of more than 30 h at 0.99T_m.
