A new design of the transversely excited (TE) nitrogen laser master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) system is presented, which provides a coherent beam with nearly diffraction-limited divergence and single-line narrow band spectrum. A Fabry-Perot etalon was inserted into the oscillator cavity and the output beam was amplified by the power amplifier. The output power was 0.5 mJ with coherence length of 25 cm, which corresponds to the spectral width of 1.2 GHz. The brightness of the laser beam was as high as 2.2×10^<20> W/m^2・sr・nm, which is about 10^5 higher than the value of that of conventional nitrogen lasers.
