Real-Time Observation of Picosecond Pulse Compression by Saturable Absorber

The amplified picosecond pulses of a dye laser synchronously pumped by a mode-locked Ar^+ laser were compressed by a saturable absorber (DODCI). The deformation of the pulses was studied by real-time observation. The incident and output pulse shapes were observed simultaneously and compared with each other in single-shot experiments using a streak camera. The shape of the deformed and compressed pulse obtained by numerical calculation on a model based on a "two-level" approximation agreed well with the observed shape of the output pulse.
