Upconversion luminescence and photoluminescence (PL) from Er-doped CaGa2S4 crystal were investigated. Opaque polycrystalline samples were grown by the solid state method and transparent single crystalline samples by the self-flux method. The samples were excited by a laser line of 532 nm, 514.5 nm, 488.0 nm, 476.5 nm or 457.9 nm for the observation of upconversion luminescence and excited by a laser line of 532 nm, 457.9 nm or 325 nm for PL measurement. Four upconversion luminescence bands were observed at 385 nm, 410 nm, 455 nm and 495 nm which were attributed to the transitions of $\text{$^{4}$G$_{11/2}$}\rightarrow\text{$^{4}$I$_{15/2}$}$, $\text{$^{2}$H$_{9/2}$}\rightarrow\text{$^{4}$I$_{15/2}$}$, $\text{$^{4}$F$_{5/2}$}\rightarrow\text{$^{4}$I$_{15/2}$}$ and $\text{$^{4}$G$_{11/2}$}\rightarrow\text{$^{4}$I$_{13/2}$}$ in Er3+ ion, respectively, from the samples grown by the solid state method and by the self-flux method.
