On Modes of a PIG Discharge

Experiments have been carried out to study the oscillation phenomena in a hot cathode PIG discharge tube which has been used extensively for a high density plasma source. There are four modes of PIG discharge. In the low frequency oscillation mode, a cycloidal motion of electrons at the sheath in front of the cylindrical anode excites a coherent oscillation on the central plasma column whose diameter is equal to that of the hot cathode. This mode of PIG discharge is characterized by he appearance of the magnetron cut-off field above which the oscillation occurs. Other three modes are briefly discussed in connection with this mode.
