Numerical Study of Vertical Stability in Elongated Tokamak

The authors have investigated an equilibrium and its vertical stability for a plasma column having several shapes with elongated cross-sections corresponding to actual experimental cases.The free boundary equilibrium configuration of an elongated plasma column is obtained by means of the virtual casing principle.Its vertical stability is investigated for three cases:the ideal stabilizing shell case;the shell-less case;and the case when only the curvature effect of the external field is taken into account all as a function of the elongation ratio.It is shown that a plasma column with a rectangular cross-section has advantages over an elliptic one for obtaining stable elongated configuration, and it is expected to be stable up to the elongation ratio 3.3 even in the shell-less case.
