Effect of Magnetic Shaping on the Helical Instability

We observed mode changes of the helical perturbations in a tokamak as afunction of the shaping degree. Magnetic shaping is performed using an octopolefield windings and the plasma cross-section is shaped into square. When theshaping current is increased, the onset of the helical perturbations is suppressed.This phenomenon is explainecl by the increase of the safety factor at the plasmaboundary.
