Luminescence of Bound Excitons in Tellurium-Doped Zinc Sulfide Crystals

Luminescence properties of bound excitons in ZnS: Te are studied, paying special attention to the nature of the single and paired Te centers and energy transfer between them. From the mirror image relations of emission and excitation spectra the binding energies of an exciton to these centers are evaluated. The capture cross-section for an intrinsic exciton is about fifty times larger in a paired center than in a single center. Simple one-dimensional configuration coordinate diagrams are calculated, which explain well the observed luminescence properties. Resonance energy transfer from a single to a paired center takes place because of the spectral overlap, the measurement of emission decay time, presenting direct evidence. Further it is shown that at temperatures above about 100 K an exciton or a free electron-hole pair thermally released from a single center migrates to a paired center causing another type of energy transfer.
