A possible role of dihydroconiferyl alcohol (DCA) in regulating cell growth in Helianthus tuberosus L. tuber slices was studied. DCA synergistically enhanced the effect of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on cell expansion when given to freshly cut tuber slices. On the other hand, the synergistic interaction between DCA and 2,4-D was not observed in tuber slices which had been aged for 20 h in water after slicing. Like DCA, gibberellic acid (GA) synergistically enhanced the effect of auxin on cell expansion when given to freshly cut tuber slices. Interaction between DCA and the suboptimal concentration of GA was additive, while DCA had no effect on cell expansion caused by 2,4-D in the presence of GA at the optimal concentration. 2,4-D induced DNA synthesis when given to freshly cut tuber slices, but this auxin effect was not influenced by DCA. The occurrence of DCA-like substances in tuber slices was examined by testing the effect of tuber extracts on GA-induced hypocotyl elongation in decotylized lettuce seedlings. Both of the acidic and basic ethyl acetate fractions synergized the effect of GA on lettuce hypocotyl elongation, as did DCA. The content of DCA-like substances in tuber slices increased during the aging period. Thin-layer chromatography, however, revealed that the physiological activity of DCA-like substances detected in tuber extracts was not due to DCA.
