Brassinolide (BR) stimulated elongation of etiolated squash hypocotyl segments with outer tissues removed, as well as that of unpeeled segments, while IAA has no effect on peeled segments. BR changed the mechanical properties of cell walls of the inner tissue. The inner tissue is probably the target tissue in BR-induced elongation.
