Effect of Gibberellic Acid and Metabolic Inhibitors of DNA and RNA Synthesis on Hypocotyl Elongation and Cell Wall Loosening in Dark-Grown Lettuce Seedlings

The effect of inhibitors of nucleic acid metabolism on cell wall loosening in hypocotyls of dark-grown lettuce seedlings was studied in relation to the gibberellic acid (GA) action that stimulates hypocotyl elongation. 5-Fluorodeoxyuridine (FUDR), trifluorothymine deoxyribose, mitomycin C, aminopterin, 5-fluorouracil and cordycepin produced mechanical rigidity of the cell wall of the hypocotyl when they inhibited elongation in the presence or absence of added GA. The effect of FUDR on the mechanical property of the cell wall and on hypocotyl elongation was nullified by thymidine, but not by uridine.
