A biologically active substance with contracting activity towards isolated guinea-pig ileum has been isolated from the gorgonian Euplexaura erecta collected in Japanese coastal waters, and it was identified as prostaglandin F_<2α>. This is the first report of the isolation of prostaglandins from gorgonians obtained outside the Caribbean area.
