Effect of Peritectic Reaction on the Toughness of As-Solidified Steel

The effects of carbon and nickel contents on the toughness of as-solidified steel were investigated using as-cast specimens. The sulfur-segregation was also examined by X-ray microprobe analyser. The toughness of as-solidified steel deteriorated remarkably over carbon and nickel contents with which peritectic reaction starts, because sulfur was more segregated. For the higher toughness, the carbon and nickel contents of steel weld metal by high productive processes should be controlled in order to solidify into as δ phase as well as lower sulfur content.
