This study intends to clarify the reason why, a low-hydrogen lime type electrode is sensitive to hydrogen porosity of weld metal in spite of its low diffusible hydrogen content. Metal transfer, viscosity of molten slag, and the difference in features of hydrogen bubbles through molten slag are studied using various kinds of electrode fluxes dried or moistened. From the study it is deduced that oversaturated gaseous bubbles form more easily and continuously in molten metal under molten low-hydrogen slag than under molten ilmenite slag and, in the latter case, a large amount of oversaturated gas is generated just after solidification of molten metal.
