In this research SS41 steel welded joints were tensile prestrained and the effect of prestrains on fatigue strength improvement was investigated. Moreover, as a method of easy local prestraining of welded joints, the effect of hammer peening on fatigue strength improvement was examined. As a result, it was found that the fatigue strength of welded joints tends to increase with a rising tensile prestrain. The cause of this improvement, then, is considered to be due to an increasing hardness of weld toes caused by work hardening and a conspicuous decrease of tensile residual stress on the welds surface or its change into compressive residual stress. Furthermore, through hammer peening the weld toes, the fatigue strength was improved, but this improvement is mainly due to the shape effect following the deformation of weld toes to which work hardening by hammer peening was added.
