In this research controlled thermal severity (CTS) and Y-groove cracking tests were performed underwater on mild steel plates of various plate thicknesses using different kinds of covered electrodes, and the crack sensitivity of underwater welds was investigated. Moreover, the relation between plate thickness and crack occurrence tendency, the cooling rates, the diffusible hydrogen contents of the underwater weld metals, and the hardness of welds were measured and microstructures were observed. In both above-mentioned cracking tests, cracks at the underwater welding heat affected zone were found to tend to increase with decreasing plate thickness, and it was recognized that the relation between plate thickness and crack occurrence tenaency was just the opposite to the case of welding in air. The reasun is considered to be the augmenting of the cooling rate with decreasing plate thickncss and the consequent increase in the maximum hardness of the heat affected zone.
