Insert-type Electron Beam Welding Technology (Report 1) : Characteristics of Insert-type Welding

It is well known that electron beam welding process has many advantages over conventional welding processes and that it can be effectively applied to weld various kinds of metals. In electron beam welding, however, some complications appear, such as : mechanically and metallurgically poor properties of weld metal, poor weld geometry and difficulty of addition of filler material. This paper deals with need to solve abovementioned problems by introducing insert metal at 6 mm-thick and 12 mm-thick joints, carbon steel to carbon steel and 2.25 Cr-1 Mo steel to austenitic stainless steel. obtained results may be summarized as follows : (i) Proper joint configuration and uranami welding conditions are found which produce excellent weld geometry and X-ray properties. Desirable "Active Beam Parameter" a_b, is 1.05 to 1.20 (where a_b≡D_O/D_F, D_O : object distance, D_F : focal length). Further, by adoption of joint configuration with both insert metal and root space stable uranami bead can be easily formed and range of proper uranami welding conditions widens. (ii) Metallurgical and mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures can be remarkably improved by introduction of insert metal.
