The characteristics of both fracture stress curves, cleavage and fibrous, were investigated in regard to their dependences on temperature and stress-triaxiality. Used for experiments are a killed mild steel and hlgh tensile strength steel. As the results of the experiments, the following important informations are obtained. (1) The cleavage fracture stress curve is hardly affected by changes in temperature and stress-triaxiality, while the fibrous fracture stress curve is remarkably sensitive to those changes. (2) The condition for fibrous fracture is represented by one stress curve in the coordinates of the octahedral shearing stress and strain, regardless to the degree of stress-triaxiality. (3) A relationship was found for structural steels between the height of both fracture stress curves and transition temperature in V-Charpy test, using a criterion as indicated in Eq. (6).
