About 20 years have passed since studies on biofeedback were started. A section for "BIOFEEDBACK" was provided in CIM (Cumulated Index Medicus) in 1977 and it has since become relatively easy to retrieve references as to the papers written in English. As to the papers written in Japanese, however, only 10 papers in all were recorded in CIM during a period of 14 years from 1977 to 1990. So it is no exaggeration to say that the actual state and trend of biofeedback studies in Japan are hardly known to overseas researchers. According to Saito et al. (1992), biofeedback papers written in Japan from 1970 to 1987 are estimated at about 860,which corresponds to 28 percent of global publications introduced in the same period. In the present paper we studies the papers recorded in JICST (Japan Information Center Science and Technology) which covers papers at the level comparable to that in CIM and may be called a Japanese version of CIM, and introduced the trend of biofeedback studies during a period of 10 years from 1981 when retrieving data at JICST became possible in Japan to 1990 mainly in reference to such items as the chronological changes in the papers recorded, changes in the clinical application, changes in the feedback parameters and the trend of the journals carrying biofeedback papers.
