We made a philological study based on papers dealing with biofeedback (hereinafter abbreviate to BF) that are carried in CIM. The total number of papers carried during a period of 17 years from 1977 to 1993 was 1844. More than l30 papers was carried yearly from 1977 to 1983,but the number of papers carried decreased gradually from 1984 to 1987. The number of papers carried froml988 on is hovering about a low level with about 80 papers yearly, about half the number of papers carried between 1980 and 1983 when a peak was reached. When studied from the aspect of clinical application, papers on BF application to rehabilitation of hemiplegia and cerebral palsy and also to hypertension have been published continually during the period concerned, but application to chronic pains consisting mainly of headache, heart diseases including arrhythmia and psychiatric domain including chronic anxiety shows a tendency to decrease, and cases of application to bronchial asthma, urinary and fecal incontinence and dental domain trend to increase instead. Regarding the feedback modality, it remained unchanged, so far as papers dealing with BF application are concerned, with EMG accounting for almost 45% followed by PT and EEG in this order but some changes were noted in BP, Resp and HR. Besides, mention was also made of changes in the journals that carry BF papers written in languages other than English.
