A Computer Assisted Noninvasive Evaluation of Three Autonomic Nervous Functions

We evaluated autonomic nervous system (ANS) by noninvasive monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) and plethysmography (PG), and estimated the reliability of computer-assisted ANS analysis system. Alpha-, beta-, and pan-sympathetic nervous functions were supposed to be assessed by PG amplitude, pulse transit time (PTT) and the coefficient of variation of R-R intervals (CVR) respectively. Postural change test revealed decrease of PG amplitude with sitting and standing posture, decrease of PTT with standing posture, and no change of CVRR. Cold pressor test showed significant decrease of PG amplitude and PTT within immersion, but slight nonsignificant decrease of CVRR. In addition, PG amplitude slowly recovered its baseline level, whereas PTT recovered immediately.
