[SHORT REPORTS]Effects of 2-Methoxyethanol and Methoxyacetic Acid on Preimplantation Mouse Embryos in vivo

The effects of methoxyethanol (2-ME) and methoxyacetic acid (MAA) on the development of preimplantation mouse embryos were examined in vivo. Female mice were injected with single subcutaneous dose of 4, 6 or 10 mmol/kg body weight of 2-ME, 2, 4, or 6 mmol/kg of MAA on day 0 of gestation. Embryos were recovered and examined for abnormalities by flushing the uterus on day 3.5 of gestation. There were significantly more abnormal blastocysts and degenerated embryos in the groups treated with 6 or 10 mmol/kg 2-ME and with 4 or 6 mmol/kg MAA than there were in the controls. There findings indicate that 2-ME MAA inhibit the development of preimplantation embryos. 2-ME and MAA had similar effects on the embryos, with the distribution of abnormal embryos at various developmental stages was likewise comparable between the two drugs.
