<SHORT REPORTS>High Incidence of Anorectal Malformations Induced by Transplacental Infusion of All-Trans Retinoic Acid into Suncus

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is a potent teratogen and causes many types of congenital malformations in laboratory animals. In this study, the optimal induction of anorectal malformations in the fetuses of suncus was sought by determining the most apropriate ATRA dosage and stage of pregnancy for infusion. Females on a single day between days 10 and 13 of pregnancy received one intrapertioneally injected dose of ATRA, which ranged from 50-200 mg/kg of body weight. Living fetuses with anorectal malformations were most frequently obtained ( 88.2%) when 100 mg/kg of ATRA was administered to females on day 12 of pregnancy.
