Teratogenicity of single maternal injections of patulin in mice was evaluated in this study. Pregnant mice in the five treatment groups were intraperitoneally injected with 8 mg/kg patulin on one do days 7,8,9,10 and 11 of pregnancy. The fetal resorption rates were significantly higher in treated groups than in the control, except for those receiving dosages on day 7 of pregnancy. The weight of fetuses was significantly reduced in all treated groups. Many malformed fetuese with exencephaly, cleft palate or scoliosis were observed following maternal treatment with patulin on one of days 8-11 of pregnancy. This is the first report which attempts to demonstrate the teratogenicity of patulin in mammals.
