[SHORT REPORTS]Effects of 2-Methoxyethanol and Methoxyacetic Acid on Preimplantation Mouse Embryos in vitro

• In this study we examined the effects of methoxyethanol (2-ME) and methoxyacetic acid (MAA) on the development of preimplantation mouse embryos in vitro. Embryos at the two-cell stage were exposed to medium containing 0, 0.1, 1, or 10 mM of either 2-ME or MAA, and were cultured for 60 hours and then examined for abnormalities. There were significantly more abnormal embryos in groups treated with 1 and 10 mM MAA than in the controls. However, the frequency of abnormal embryos exposed to 2-ME was not statistically different from the control in any group. These results indicate that only MAA interferes with the development of preimplantation embryos and suggest that 2-ME has little teratogenic effect in vitro when not metabolized into MAA.
