The efect of intra-support diffusional resistance to oxygen transger on the growth rate of a strain of strictly aerophilic yeast (Candida lipolytica IAM 12188) which was immobilized in spherical and rod agar-gel sokuds was assessed theoretically by a computer simulation. The calculated results were compred with the experimental data obtained previously. A transient change in the oxygen uptake rate of immobilized growing microorganisms during cultivation was predicted by assuming that the induciton of respiratory acticvity of yeast cells depends on dissolved oxygen concentraton. The axial distribution of oxygen uptake rate of yeast cells growing in agar-gel rod showed a maximum at the interface with fresh nutrient medium, falling to negligible amount with distance from the interface. To minimize the resistance of oxygen diffusion, the yeast cells should be immobilized in particles less than 0.2 mm in diameter.
