Deoxyribonucleic Acid Homologies in Strains of Gluconobacter Species : Taxonomic Studies on Acetic Acid Bacteria and Allied Organisms. Part VIII.

DNA homologies were examined for 20 strains assigned to Gluconobacter species by hybridization under the conditions of 2×SSG containing 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate at 63℃ for 72 h with ^3H-labeled DNAs of G. oxydans subsp. oxydans NCIB 9013 and "G. cerinus" IFO 3267. When homology indexes were determined with the labeled DNA of NCIB 9013,higher values (46-82%) were observed with DNAs of 9 strains, IFO 3250,IFO 3462,IFO 3293,IFO 3294,IFO 3189,IFO 3287,IFO 12467,IFO 3990,and IFO 3244,whereas lower values (1-24%) were observed with DNAs of the other 9 strains, IFO 3251,IAM 1832,IFO 3267,IFO 3171,IFO 3285,IFO 3275,IFO 3172,IFO 3254,and IFO 3255. Under the same conditions using the labeled DNA of IFO 3267,6 strains, IFO 3251,IFO 1832,IFO 3171,IFO 3275,IFO 3172,and IFO 3255,showed higher indexes (52-91%), whereas NCIB 9013 and the 9 strains mentioned above including IFO 3250,IFO 3462,IFO 3293,and so on showed lower values (1-32%). One strain, IFO 3260,and three strains, IFO 3285,IFO 3260,and IFO 3254,had 39% and 12-30%indexes, respectively, to the labeled DNAs of NCIB 9013 and IFO 3267. Seventeen strains of Acetobacter and 8 strains of Frateuria species showed low values (1-24%). These results indicate that the genus Gluconobacter is divided into two or more groups.
