A possible grottnd state of NaVzO., is proposed based on the Hartree approxinaation for bothon-site and intersite Cotrlottnb interactions. The restrlts indicate that the intersite Cotrloraubinteraction indtrces a zigzag type of charge disproportionation (i.e., charge ordering) alor'xg theladders of V ions, restrlting in localized spins betxveen neigluboring ladders to f'oruaa a spin gap.This new state, which is difl'erent frozn the spin-Peierls state so far believed, seetns to be consistentxvith the existing experitaaental restrlts.
