NMR Study of Antiferromagnetic Spinel CoCo_2O_4 in Paramagnetic and Ordered State

Nuclear magnetic resonance of "Co at both the tetrahedral A-site and octahedral B-site inan older generation spinel compound of antiferromagnetic COCO2O4 (T3 : 34 K) was carriedout between T : 1.4 and 300 K to provide additional information on the importance of thelocal crystal field parameters and electron-electron correlations. From an analysis of the Tindependent relaxation rate of "Co at the A-site in the paranaagnetic state, the super-exchangeinteraction J between the Co" ions at the A-site through intervening O' and Co" ions isestimated to be 0.050 cm ' with an exchange frequency w. : 5.9XlO" sec ', which can notsimply be explained within the framework of the Weiss field. A small experimental value of thespin hyperfine field at the A-site, A. : l.63xlO ' cm ', is well understood when the second-order orbital moment due to the spin-orbit interaction is taken into consideration. The energydif['erence A between 72. and e. orbitals at the A- and B-site in COC02O4 is found to be 3.3x 10'cm ' and l7.7x 10' cm ', respectively.
