Surface Optic Waves in Ultrathin Films Bounded by Identical Slightly Lossy Materials

We have investigated the properties of surface optic waves (SOW's), such as surface polaritons or guided waves, in ultrathin films sandwiched by identical slightly lossy materials. It has been found that the imaginary part of dielectric constant Im (ε_s) of surrounding materials strongly affects characteristics of SOW. For example, the propagation length of SOW is remarkably changed by the existence of Im (ε_s).
