Ground-State Properties of the One-Dimensional Isotropic Spin-1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with Competing Interactions

Ground-state properties are studied for the c>uae-dinvensional isotropic spiut-1Heisenberg maguaeL witl? antiferromagnetic xtearesU-neigl?bor (1111) arad taext-nearest-neiglabor (01111) interactions. The eraergy, t}to singlet-triplet energy gap, the txx'o-s7>incorrelation function, and the den Nijs and Romnaelse string correlation function inthe ground states of finite-size systenas of up to 16 spins are calculated exactly. B)' ax-trapolating these results, the grouxad-state properties at tlte infinite-size lintit are clis-cussed. It is found, in particular, that as the ratio of the nnn iuvteraction coxastant tothe nn one increases, the striuag order )carameter (the limiting value of the lotagcst-distamtce string correlation function) as well as tlte I-Ialdaxae gap (tlte limiting value ofthe singlet-triplet energy gap) divided by the sunt of both interaction cou?stants in-creases. This result implies that tlae competition between the antiferromagnetic ranauad nnn interactions stabilizes tlte Haldane plaase.ground-state properties, one-dimeztsional systcna, spiza-] Heisenberg antifer-rornagnet, competing interactions, metltod of exact diagonalizatiout, Haldauaegap, string order parameter
