Mean-Field Theory of Peierls and Spin-Peierls Instabilities : Commensurability, Harmonics and Dimerized-State Pinning

Meaux-field study of the Pei'erls instability is ntade at zero temperatxure with theelectron occupation number varied over a wide range between half-occupax?cyatad nearly zero-occupancy. Total energy of the systezm, order paramc:ters and thelattice displacement pattern are calculated by taking account of all the acconupany-ing ha.rmonics. The loweriuag of the total energy per atom is shown to be very largein the neighborhood of the half- and 1/15-occupaxacies. The amplitudes of laar-monics ittcrease drastically as the e]ectro?a nutmber approaches the zer<c-occupa??cy.The spin-Peierls transition is also studied witlu an XY model. Althotngh the effectof magnetic field 011 the spiua-Peierls system has a close similarity t<:>that of theelectron u?umber variation on the ?Peierls system, an iunportant differacnce betweenthem is pointed out on the pinning of a dincerized state.
