Surface Magnons and Surface Spin Arrangements in Heisenberg Magnets with Two Kinds of Exchange Interactions

Acoustic surface-magnon spectra are calctmlated for semi-infinite ferro- andantiferromagnets, where spins are cotupled via exchange interactions botlt withnearest neighbors (./)) aftd with next-nearest neighbors (./2). It is found that, whenthe parameter cx=J./?J.? lies in certain intervals, the surface-ntagnon frequency isnegative or imaginary, although the bulk-magnon frequencies renxain real andpositive. This condition indicates that the uniform ferro- or antiferromagneticspin arrangement is not stable. For several cases of this type, it is shown tlaata nonuniform spin arrangenaent, characterized by a rearrangement of spins in thesurface region, has a lower classical spin-ordering energy than the unifornt state,and hence is stable. In various cases, various different arrangements of surfacespins are found to be stable, incltzding a helical arrangement, in which spins inthe surface region are ordered with helical synanaetry while bulk spins are in anantiferromagnetic state.
