Effect of Rhombic Distortion on the Polarized X-Ray Absorption Spectra in High Tc Superconductors

We theoretically study the polarization dependence of the Ctu 27t-XAS (X-ray ab-sorption spectrum) in high T. superconductors with 1.he use of a simple Cub. cluster.We take account of both the Cu 3d(x' -y') and 3#(3;' -r') orbitals, and study theeffect of a possible rhombic distortion by which the two 3cl orbitals are mixed witheach other. The polarized XAS is calculated both in the undopecl "Cu"" system andthe hole-doped "Cu"" system. A considerably large intensity ratio between El c andELc absorption spectra is obtained in the "Cu"" system as a result of the rhombicdistortion, where E and c are directions of the X-ray<:lectric field and the crystalline c-axis, respectively. These results help to explain the increase in the polarized E// c Cu2p-XAS white line going from the insulating to the hole-doped phases in Bi-Sr-CaCu-O (2212) systems.
