Propagation Velocity of Exciton Polariton in InI Single Crystals

Anisotropic propagation velocities of exciton polaritons along the b axis of Inlsingle crystals are obtained both from the measurement of time of flight of picosec-ond light pulses through the samples and from the analysis of the interference structure of reflection spectra. On the basis of exciton polariton picture, longitudinal-transverse splitting energies of the lowest excitons are obtained as (0.06 * 0.01) meVand (l.0f0.1) meV for the electric vectors parallel to the a and c axes, respectively.To explain the energy dependence of the velocity of light pulse below the n = l exciton, one has to take into account the contribution of the band-to-band transitionbesides the exciton one. Rapid increase of the velocity above the band gap is suggested to be caused by the increase of the energy damping for ionized electron-holepairs.[InI, picosecond time of flight, interference spectra, exciton polariton, group ve- lj locity, energy velocity, polariton dispersionI
