Quantum Size Effect on the Excited State of HgI_2, PbI_2 and BiI_3 Clusters and Molecules in Zeolite LTA

The absorption spectra are reported for Hglz, Pbl. and Bil. clusters and moleculesincorporated into supercages of zeolite L'TA at various loading densities. The spectraexhibit bands origiuaating from a molecule t o five molecular cltusters of Hgl. and Pbl.,and from a monomer and a dinaer of Bit.. The excitation energies are lat'gely shiftedto tlae higlaer exaergy side compared witlt the respective bulk exciton energies, and s1?i ftwith decreasing tlve number of molecules, iradicating the quantuna size effect on the ax-citatiota energy. Tlve blue sltift decreases in the order of Hgl., Pbl. auad Bit,. The blueshift can be interpreted qualitatively in ternas of the effective mass approximation, butquantitative a?aalysis is be)'ond tlae framexvork of tlte effective mass ap)aroximation.Tlte quantum size effect on tlte oscillator :strexagtlt is also observed.exciton, quantum confinement, cluster, zeolite, NaA
