Spatical Distribution and Dynamics of Excitons in Anthracene Crystals

The excitation spectra of the excitonic luminescence bands in anthracene crystalsare investigated in detail. The experimental results at 2 K are interpreted by the diffu-sion of exciton polaritons. At room temperature, those are interpreted by the excitondiffusion and the luminescence reabsorption. The diffusion lengths of excitons at 2 Kand room temperature are determined to be 30 f 1 and 30 8 5 nm for the directionperpendicular to the a#-plane of the crystal, respectively. These values are severalorders smaller than that determined by the measurement of the time resolvedluminescence spectra. The discrepancy is interpreted by introducing the excitontransfer process caused by the luminescence reabsorption. The temperature and thesample-thickness dependences of the luminescence decay-time are also interpretedself-consistently by the same model.
