Exciton Luminescence in Mercurous Halide Single Crystals

Broad Gaussian luminescence bands with large Stokes shift from free excitonabsorption bands have been observed at 11.7 kcm-' and 11.1 kcm-' in mercuroushalide single crystals of Hg.I. and Hg.Br., respectively at 4.2 K. The excitationspectra and the temperature dependences of the j>eak energy, the intensity andthe decay time have been studied in the above two luminescence bands. A modelof self-trapped triplet excitons having two excited states separated by 70 cm- ' isproposed in order to explain the experimental results of the luminescence. Theimportance of interactions of a mercury diatomic molecule with ten neighboringhalogen atoms is suggested frorn the unpolarized nature of the luminescence.
