PrPtBi is fotrnd to crystallize in the cubic IVIgAgAs-type structure. At the specific heat,an anomaly appears at about 1.35 K, the temperattrre at which the entropy approaches thevaltme xRln2. Data on the specific heat and naagnetic strsceptibility suggest that the crystalline-electric-field (C.E.F) ground state of PrPtBi is the non-Kramer's doublet F3. Below about 2.5K, we observe a huge softening of the elastic constant C-j-, which suggests the onset of electricquadrupolar ordering. The Hall constant gives evidence that PrPtBi is a low-carrier systena, assuggested from band calculations.
