Ultrasonic Studies and Phonon Modes of (RE) Ba_2Cu_3O_7

Temperature dependences of an ultrasonic attenuation coefficient a(T) and soundvelocity V,(T) have been measured for high-Cf. superco?tductors (RE)Ba.Cu,0.(RE=Y, Nd, Sm, Dy, Era. On increasing the ionic radius from Er to Nd, the following was found: (i) The increase of the T. is found to be< 1 t<. (ii) The peak positionsin a('7') versus T curves which correspond to the energies of ojctical phonons in a low-energy region show an increase by - 10%. This change may be associated with the in-crease of the lattice constants by - 1%. (iii) The sound veloc:ity becomes larger, butthe change is mainly caused by the difference in the degree of l'ulling of the crystals. Us-ing a comparison of the calculated results of phonon dispersion curves by Yasuda andMase, a brief discussion is presented regarding the relation between the change ofphonon spectra and that of T. within the BCS-McMillan scUneme.[(RE)Ba.Cu,0., high-7'. stxperconductivity, ul1.rasonie atlenuation coefficient, lf sound velocity, phonon spectral
