The Kerr constants in C.H, and C5H,NO. are discussed by means of the statisticalmechanics of Maxwell-Boltzmann's distribution of the molecules under the biasingfield. The anisotropic electronic polarizabilities are obtained as cv.=l2.06(A')(parallel to C.H. plane) and cx.=7.I43 (A') (perpendicular to C.H, plane) for theKerr constant 6.0 x 10 ' in C.H., and also cv,= 13.644 (A') (parallel to the polar axis)and cx. f a.= 26.50 (A') for the Kerr constant 269 X 10 ' in C.lI.N0,.
