On Birefringence of NaNO_2 and NaNO_3 and on Anisotropy of Electronic Polarizabilities of NO_2 and NO_3 Radicals

The birefrinsences of NaNOz and NaN0s have been discussed by takingaccount Of the d1POlC unteractxon IDOIIB the NB-RODS llld the N0z-Tadicals orN0e-radicals. From the condition necessarv to exr>lain the birefringence theelectronic r>olarizabilities of these radicals are obtained. The radicals have gen..erall>' the anisotror>ic r>olarizabilities. It seems valid to attrisute this propertyto the anisotror>>' of the N-0 bond. Amon: the various models, it can be con..cluded that the model based upon the bonds is more suitable than that of thedipole model within the region of the radicals. Discussion about the birefringenceby comparing with that of CaC03 is also made.
