The birefringence of CaC0. is discussed taking account of dipole interactionamonx the Ca" and C0r --tons. The electronic rolarizabilities of the COr -tons are obtained as x.=3.I8Xl0-"cm' and a.=4.20Xl0-"cm' in thedirection parallel and perpendicular to the optical axes respectively for n.=1.486 and n.=l.658. The bond poIarizabi[ities of C -0 can be obtained as (//=1.74 x 10-" cm' and a.= 1.06 x 10-" cm' in the directions parallel and perpen-dicular to the direction of the line connecting C and 0 respectively with anisotropicratio 12///X.=1.64.
