NMR Study of Size Effect in Ferromagnetic Ni Metal

The hyperflne field (H.j) distribution and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxationtime (I.) of "Ni in metallic Ni fine particle of 30 X 800 A in average size weremeasured in the temperature range 4.2 K X 0.4 K by NMR spin echo technique.Below 200 A H.j has a wide distribution toward the lower field side indicating apredominant decrease of the magnetization and/or increasing of s-d mixing nearthe surface region of the particles. T. decreases rapidly with decreasing size keepingthe relation of I.I=const. T. increases with external field. The relaxation behavioris qualitatively exaplained by the Weger mechanism through the indirect infer-action between nuclear spin and conduction electrons via the spin wave wherethe spin wave stiffness constant decreases with decreasing size.
